Help us to give life to a beautiful and wild forest
Hi! Thanks for showing interest and clicking on our campaign.
The goal of this campaign is to raise funds to rewild four hectares of eucalyptus monoculture. Our region faces soil degradation and high risk of wildfires every summer, prompting us to take action and experiment to demonstrate that positive change is possible. If managed and executed successfully, we aim to show how reestablishing more biodiverse habitats can enable fauna and flora to thrive. This not only addresses soil degradation but also reduces the risk of wildfires. In the long term, benefits include the cultivation of nutritious and healthy soils, significant reductions in wildfire risks, and effective carbon sequestration, among others. Ambitiously spoken, our project could serve as a role model for people and organizations in the region looking to rewild and reforest their land.
Transforming a monoculture into a wild forest is a lengthy process, requiring several steps. The first step, cutting down the eucalyptus, has already been completed. As the second step, we now need to dig out all the remaining roots, and that's what we want to raise funds for. We need to hire heavy machinery in the form of a 9-ton excavator to remove the roots. It will take approximately three weeks until the work is completed.
Our idea is to regrow a somewhat natural forest with all its typical regional species, such as cork oaks, other oak trees, medronho, etc. An example for us is a project near Aljezur, Portugal, started in the mid-'90s. The people behind the project carefully removed the eucalyptus and minimized damage to existing plants like cork oaks or medronho. These and other plants were intended to further spread and form the basis for the wild forest. Over the years, they only intervened to combat invasive species, allowing nature to take its course. Today, you can encounter a young and diverse natural forest there. The number of species on the land has increased from 32 in 1996 to more than 300 today. This project inspired us to do what we're doing now. The prospect of having a diverse forest that is home to many different plants and animals motivates us.
Every donation will help us reach our goal. Thank you for your attention!
